Rye father of boy killed on bike puts traffic sign on lawn

Jimmy Amico, who has relentlessly pushed for pedestrian improvements along Midland Avenue after his son was killed in 2006, is taking action on his own.

Today he put up a 30-inch sign that urges motorists to slow down. Jim’s 10-year-old son, Jarrid, was riding his bike across Midland Avenue near Palisade Road when a man driving a van hit him.

Although police say the man wasn’t speeding at the time the accident, Amico says too many people speed along the corridor.

The sign, he said, is “to make a statement to let people know the city, and the police department are refusing to do anything about this problem. I’m hoping people will see it and understand the problem more, and maybe they’ll ask me to put a sign on their lawn.”

City officials say it doesn’t appear the sign violates any ordinance.
