Campaign manager defends Hall’s record • 10.27.09
Police Chief David Hall’s campaign manager insisted Tuesday that someone trying to damage Hall’s reputation in the mayoral race must have somehow sent a document with false credentials to the League of Women Voters.

Opponents of Hall had accused him of lying in LWV voting guide, which states Hall has a bachelor’s degree from Springfield College and a public adminstration master’s degree from Princeton University. Hall did not graduate from any college.
David Simpson, Hall’s campaign manager, has claimed that the version he sent was not the information published in the guide. The LWV maintains the only questionnaire it received was one that included degrees from Springfield and Princeton.
“Whatever this other questionnaire has with some phony degrees on it, it is out of character with the rest of the campaign and obviously didn’t come from the campaign,” Simpson said, noting that the erroneous information does not appear in any of Hall’s candidate literature.
Iona College dedicates new library • 10.27.09
Iona College recently celebrated the dedication of the re-designed and expanded Ryan Library. The library combines traditional services with modern technology. Features include 104-dual-boot iMac workstations, networked printers and scanners, and access to more than 80 electronic research data bases. Students looking for a study break can find it at the new library café.
The 73,800 square-foot, two-story library at the New Rochelle school will serve 4,300 students and alumni. The $14 million project was paid for by funds contributed by private donors and grants from two foundations.
Since opening at the start of the fall semester, the library has already had a jump in visitors. School officials report that an average of 1,200 people visit the library on a typical weekday, up from about 750 to 1,000 people in the past.
Ninety-nine year Rye woman still keeping active • 10.27.09
I just photographed 99-year-old Pauline Schildkaurt of Rye working out with her personal trainer Killeen Good. As she closes in on her centennial, Ms. Schildkaurt still manages three forty-minute workouts each week. She’s unbelievable to watch. Look for Theresa Juva’s story in an upcoming edition of The Journal News. To view an online gallery of photos, click here.

Made in Rye Brook: jewelry for a cause • 10.27.09
We had a story in Sunday’s paper about Blind Brook senior Alexandra Blaiotta, 17, who has quietly raised about $25,000 for medical research. She sells handmade, beaded jewelry to friends and family and gives the money to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Four years ago, Alex and her mother added glass beads to a couple of old silver chains, and the project began from there. Here are Alex and Laura Blaiotta wearing those bracelets.

Here’s a look at some of Alex’s latest work. You can also check out her web site here.

Larchmont fitness center fire will disrupt workouts • 10.26.09
The store front Fitness Together, a one-on-one work out center in the mini mall on Palmer Avenue had a fire Sunday night. Firefighters from New Rochelle, Mamaroneck town and village and Larchmont got involved in keeping an as yet unexplained fire contained to that single store
front at 2005 Palmer Ave. Larchmont fire Lt. Wayne Sternemann said the business was fully engaged when firefighters arrived around 10:40 p.m. Some remained on the scene until 2:30 a.m. although the fire was under control by 11:33 p.m. One firefighter received a minor cut. Windows around the center were smashed in for venting and holes were made in the roof. The front area of the center looked relatively unscathed Monday afternoon. The fire, workers replacing windows said, was confined to the back of the shop. The structural damage from the fire and the water damage to the basement will have to be repaired before the place can re-open, Sternemann said. The telephone number on the window of the business just rang busy Monday.
