Celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day in New Rochelle02.25.10

Just got this from the New Rochelle PTA Council: Johnny Appleseed Day is March 11, and for the last three years New Rochelle seniors and youngsters have been getting together to celebrate the day with intergenerational fun and games. New Rochelle’s PTA Council and Office for the Aging are teaming up again this year to co-sponsor the “Appleseed Arcade” on Sunday, March 14, a free event from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center, 94 Davis Ave. (at the end of Maple Avenue).
Seniors and children will be paired to participate in craft projects, arcade games (bingo, ring toss, shuffleboard) and an apple race. There will also be an ice cream bar where they can “Make a Sundae for Your Senior and Yourself.”

Although the event is free, pre-registration is required, and space is limited. Registration will begin at 1:30 on the day of the event. To register in advance, or for more information, contact Tom Crossman, executive director of the New Rochelle Office of the Aging, at 914-235-2363, or your child’s PTA. “The real “Johnny Appleseed,” John Chapman, was a man with a vision,” says Beth Levy, co-chair with Robin Frankel of PTA Council’s Community Service committee. “He planted the seeds for a better future for the people who came after him, and that’s what we hope we are doing, helping these children nurture an appreciation for their elders.”

Professional flutist and composer Pamela Sklar will pay a visit to the Ossie Davis Theater in New Rochelle this Sunday for a performance that will include her original jazz-Native American composition, “A Tune For America.”

Sklar will be performing with The Sachem Trio, an offshoot of the Earl Brown Quartet. The trio is comprised of Sklar on flute, Christopher Dean Sullivan on bass and Bob Meyer on drums.

Sklar frequently performs in the New York area and has toured as a flute soloist in Paris, Italy and Japan.

“Playing in the New York area is great. It gives me the chance to play with people I really respect,” she said.

Sklar grew up in New Rochelle and said she still feels a close connection to the area.

“A Tune for America” is comprised of two parts. Part one, titled “Earth,” features the flute; part two, titled “Sky” features the bass flute and piccolo.

“I was just sitting in my house and it kind of just came to me,” said Sklar recalling her inspiration. “It was sort of like I felt something and then could musically articulate it.”

Port Chester to explain cumulative voting at Saturday meeting02.24.10

Port Chester’s effort to teach voters about the cumulative voting, the new system for electing village trustees, gets going Saturday with a meeting at the Senior Community Center.

pcvotesThe information session will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the center located behind village hall, 222 Grace Church St. The organization FairVote will help explain the process to be used for the June 15 special election and in trustee elections thereafter.

A federal judge found that Port Chester’s old at-large system denied Hispanic voters a means to fully participate in the election. Now all six trustees will be elected at once, rather than two at a time. Under cumulative voting, voters will be able to cast their six votes as they wish, devoting all six to one person or spreading them among several in any combinations.

pcvotamosA court-ordered education plan calls for a series of forums in English and Spanish leading up to the election. The dates and details of those forums will be tracked at the Port Chester Votes web site. Brochures are also being circulated to explain the changes.
