Once again, Rye town questions its existence
Just in time for the Town of Rye’s 350th anniversary this summer, it’s seeking another study on whether to put itself out of existence.
The town and three villages that fall under it – Port Chester, Rye Brook and (a portion of) Mamaroneck – applied this week for a $50,000 New York State Local Government Efficiency Grant. Mamaroneck Mayor Norm Rosenblum was reluctant to pursue the study, but his Port Chester counterpart, Dennis Pilla, succeeded in gathering support. Mamaroneck just completed a related study in 2007; the other three municipalities would contribute $5,000 toward the new study. A consultant would begin the work in April.
The Town of Rye is a vestige of government that exists mainly to collect taxes for the villages within it. The town also operates Crawford and Rye Town parks and other infrastructure. It receives $2.5 million annually in property tax revenue and pays for a staff, five legislators, legal assistance and court personnel.
The study would consider the possibilities of dissolving Rye town and turning the villages into town/villages, sharing more of their services.
