Coyote Kills Pet Dog

Posted by: Leslie Korngold - Posted in Police & Fire, Rye on Apr 02, 2010

A coyote killed a 10-year-old miniature poodle out alone for a run Wednesday.
The attack happened at the Osborn Retirement Community just before 10:30 p.m.
Police rushed to the scene in time to see a coyote fleeing.
They would have taken a shot at it, police Commissioner William R. Connors said, but it ran off.
Just last week the City of Rye posted a fact sheet on its web site about coyotes.
It points out that coyotes are hunters and that anything less than their typical 35-pound weight can be their prey.
Connors said small children, as well as pets, should not be left unsupervised. Coyotes, he said, are not just nocturnal creatures.
If confronting a coyote, be aggressive, make loud noises, wave your arms and throw sticks or stones to frighten the animal away.
Unusual coyote behavior should be reported to police, in Rye, at 914-967-1234.

I’m so sad that there has been a rash of bad press about me and my cousins. You hardly ever hear about all the good we do such as help control vermin that live here. I am truly sorry for the people that lost their dog. Please don’t hold it against my kind. (We’re dogs too.)
Us Coyotes would like to share the land with all of you. Just be careful not to leave your small pets around unattended. It’s just too tempting for a Coyote to leave alone.
    yours truly,
    Wile

when will people learn to keep their dogs on a leash and not roaming free
sorry but it partial fault of the owners of pets that get killed by bears or coyotes
if they are unleashed and at large esp at night

and yes my dog is always leashed and walked no matter what time of day or night

There always needs to be a boogieman, in this case it is the coyote. I thought dogs were suppose to be on a leash?

If you have a small dog and let it run around, there are also birds of prey capable of grabbing a miniture-anything, also there are cars and other large dogs or pit bulls that could do the same.

Like WileCoyote said, they are killing vermin that might carry lymes disease, they do eat mice.

And dont give me the bit I am anti-dog, I own a dog and walk my dog 2x a day and keep an eye out for coyote, cars and pit bulls.

if people wouldn’t move into animals territory they wouldn’t be killing their dogs. Those dogs are just a waste of time get a real dog.

In this instance, the coyotes are moving into OUR territory. There didn’t used to be coyotes around here. And, frankly, people who carry on about how animals have equal rights with humans are—to be polite—off their collective rockers. Animals that are predators need to be removed—we don’t need to share with them.

Oh goodness, they allowww coyotes in Rye. I didn’t think minorities were even allowed. Figured it was a foo foo poodle though. Anything can happen when your dog is not leashed. Owners fault. Go up to the park and see all the dog nuts letting them run free. What a mess. Send the coyotes to the park.

channel 5 reported dog was tied up.it was a companion to a senior . It is unfortunate this happened.

Seems to me that if you’re going to walk a dog, you need to have it leashed and you should carry a walking stick to use just in case. Allowing a dog to run unleashed and unsupervised is irresponsible.

Don’t be so judgmental. The little poodle was on a long leash, presumably having been let out to go to the bathroom around 10:30 at night. The owner was an elderly woman who probably couldn’t go walking her dog. The leash was attached in her backyard. Little Cleo wasn’t “roaming free” and didn’t deserve to die!
