Blessed Sacrament students hold “box night” for charity
Thirty-five students from Blessed Sacrament – St. Gabriel High School in New Rochelle camped out in boxes and tents as part of a fund-raising project for Habit for Humanity on April 30 into the morning hours of May 1. The “Box Out” night was coordinated by moderator Paul Schillace to provide an opportunity for the school community to gather for a common cause. This activity was part of the Senior Service project that began in September. Eighteen seniors have accumulated hundreds of hours of service doing painting and repair project with Habitat for Humanity in New Rochelle.
The “Box Out” night began at 7 pm, when the students “built” their temporary homes on the field next the school building. Some brought tents, but many used cardboard boxes to fashion their dwelling. After a light dinner (cooked outdoors), students visited each other’s “homes” and had friendly conversations before retiring for the night.
The fund raising goal for this project was $1,000. Students were asked to get sponsors for the hours they spent outdoors. The goal was reached by the evening of the event. Schillace wants to expand the project next year to raise the donation goal and to increase the number of students who participate in the Habitat for Humanity projects.
