Rye Brook officer breaks ankle in chase of unlicensed driver, police say • 05.28.10
A 20-year-old unlicensed Port Chester man led police from three communities on a high speed car chase then foot pursuit, during which an officer broke an ankle, according to area departments.
Police said Ramiro Novoa of 141 South Main St. would only have faced a violation for driving without a license and a ticket for driving with his high beams, an infraction, had he pulled over on Westchester Avenue at 1:20 a.m. Monday when a Port Chester cop signaled for him to lower his headlights.
Instead, Novoa took off down Westchester Avenue at 60 mph, cutting over to Rye Brook with police from Rye and Port Chester in pursuit. He struck a curb at Garibaldi Place in Rye Brook, got out, scrambled over the roof of his car and scaled a fence into Saint Mary’s Cemetery, police said.
Rye Brook Officer John Chitta broke his ankle climbing the fence, Port Chester police said. Rye police Sgt. Scott Craig found Novoa hiding in the bushes near the cemetery’s mausoleum.
Novoa was charged with unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors; unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a violation; and driving with high beams on, an infraction. He was being held on $500 bail pending a court appearance June 7.
