Port Chester restaurants add sidewalk tables06.30.10

Bakers must have a certain patience, waiting for the dough to rise and all.

Perhaps that quality came in handy for The Kneaded Bread, the bakery and lunch spot on North Main Street, which has been trying to get village approval for outdoor tables for five years. The tables are now out, with Port Chester’s blessing.

It took some measuring and tweaking of the laws before the approval was granted, Village Manager Christopher Russo said. There are limits on the amount of walkway that must be preserved on the sidewalk and rules about how the tables are placed.

“We actually made it easier for some of the cafes to have some level of outdoor seating. There seemed to be a high demand for that,” Russo said.

For the busy bakery, which opened 12 years ago, the tables help accommodate customers and make the corner more friendly and attractive, proprietor Jennifer Kohn said. There’s a new awning, shutters and exterior paint as well.

The corner will be spruced up further with the opening of a gourmet food store across Mill Street. The Tarry Lodge’s Batali-Bastianich team are working on a new retail store at the old Columbia Elevator building.

Sidewalk tables are few and far between in Port Chester, despite the high number of restaurants. Have you spotted any? Let us know.
