Port Chester trustee election: ‘Early voting’ starts Tuesday
The long-awaited, long-litigated Port Chester village trustee election is about to begin. Election Day is June 15, but voters have the option of casting ballots early tomorrow through Saturday at Village Hall. I have a story in today’s Journal News about the preparations. This is New York’s first municipal election using cumulative voting, the legal remedy resulting from the 2006 voting rights lawsuit.
The village sent out copies of a sample ballot — being held up here by Village Clerk Joan Mancuso — showing what the machine will look like when you step into the booth. Be prepared for a very large grid with many names, each repeated six times down the column. A colleague of mine noted that it looks like the periodic table. If you missed the mailing or want a closer look, all the material is on the Port Chester Votes web site. There will be people at the polls ready to assist.
In other election news:
Bart Didden, an independent candidate, has spent more than $20,000 on his own campaign, according to financial disclosure forms filed Friday.
The Republican campaign listed $17,843 in contributions to date. The Democrats listed just $1,912 in contributions through May 31, according to a statement filed June 2. The Friends of Greg Adams (a Democrat) raised $726, and Conservative John Branca had $1,050 in contributions.
Mayor Dennis Pilla has endorsed his four fellow Democrats, Daniel Brakewood, Greg Adams, Luis Marino and Anthony Saline.
Rye Town Supervisor Joseph Carvin, in a letter to the Westmore News, praised the Republican ticket of Joe Kenner, Michael Scarola, Fabiola Montoya, Sam Terenzi and Richard Cuddy. Carvin is a Republican from neighboring Rye Brook.
The Journal News editorial board ran its endorsement Sunday.
