Federal observers will be monitoring polling places during the Tuesday trustee election in Port Chester. The Department of Justice says it will deploy observers from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to watch and record activities. DOJ attorneys will maintain contact with local election officials.
The Justice Department filed the voting rights lawsuit in 2006 that led to the new election system under cumulative voting, with all six trustee seats up at once. A federal judge found that the previous at-large system discriminated against Hispanics.
