Port Chester board approves 3-year CSEA contract06.29.10

Port Chester officials have approved a three-year union contract for about 55 civil service employees that provides raises averaging 1.8 percent a year.

The contract dates back to 2008-09 and covers rank-and-file workers at village hall, public works and other departments. The highlights:

Seventeen clerical workers will work 7-hour days rather than 6.5 hours.

New hirees, who already contribute 15 percent toward their health insurance premium, will now contribute that 15 percent into their retirement.

Payments for those who opt out of health insurance, traditionally 50 percent of the premium cost, will be capped at $8,000 a year for current employees and $6,000 for new hires.

Reimbursement for educational expenses is capped at $12,000 a year for the unit.

One trustee, Joseph Kenner, voted against the agreement because he was against increases in pay. He also questioned the timing, just a week before a new village board is sworn in July 6.

“This is finishing the work of the seated board,” said Mayor Dennis Pilla, who will be joined by four newly elected trustees and two incumbents next week. “It would have been bad-faith negotiation not to do that.”
