Posted by: Liz Anderson - Posted in New Rochelle, Police & Fire on Jul 29, 2010

The New Rochelle Police Department is now accepting applications for their Explorer Program, a non-profit organization geared towards young men and women ages 14-20, in good academic standing, who have interests in careers in law enforcement.

From the announement: “Explorers are exposed to all aspects of law enforcement and gain a valuable knowledge of police functions. The cadet program was established under the direction of Commissioner Patrick Carroll, in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America, with the first Explorer Post beginning in October 2008. The Explorers are organized and run by Detective Fudge and Detective Smith who serve as the Post Advisors. Applications are due by August 4, 2010. Explorers will learn responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills and will receive hands-on training in various techniques used by law enforcement professionals including: Emergency Response Training, Traffic Stops, Search and Seizures, First Aid and CPR, Crime Scene Investigations, Child Safety and Domestic Incidents. Explorers will also participate in events held throughout the city and will assist officers with traffic control.”

More details, including who can apply and how to do it, after the jump.
“There is an established educational curriculum with classroom training based on law-related topics in conjunction with the hands-on portions of our program. The Explorer Program will host several guest speakers including professionals from the District Attorney’s Office, DEA, Probation Department, FBI, and Domestic Outreach Programs. Explorers will also be exposed to other agencies/facilities through field trips, including: Correctional Facilities, Local Police Departments (including departments with Explorer Posts), Juvenile Facilities, Forensics Labs, Local Hospitals, West Point Military Academy and The New York City Police Museum. Furthermore, Explorers can compete in an annual competition involving New York and Connecticut Posts where participants apply their knowledge in a wide range of “police scenarios”. ”

Applicants for the Explorer Program must be at least 14-20 years old; in good health; maintain at least a “C” average in school, and must have a clean criminal record. Post meetings will be held every other Wednesday from 7:00-9:00pm at the New Rochelle Police Department.
