Car break-ins hit New Rochelle07.28.10

Numerous items were stolen from six cars parked in front of homes on three neighboring streets between Monday night and early Wednesday morning, New Rochelle police said.

Several other cars had been rummaged through but nothing was stolen from those cars, New Rochelle police Capt. Joseph Schaller said.

All of the cars had been left unlocked.

The thefts took place on Weyman Avenue, Beattie Lane and Brady Avenue. The items taken included an iPod, small amounts of cash, jewelry, a computer game, and a digital camera.

A ‘Mermaid,’ upstream from Broadway07.28.10

She may be half fish, but Ariel, Disney’s little mermaid, has had nearly as many lives as a cat.

She was the focus of a 1989 feature film, a TV series, a 2008 Broadway musical and enough merchandising to make Miley Cyrus blush.

The story of the mermaid who dreams to be part of the human world takes another big step on Friday in Tarrytown when Random Farms Kids’ Theater presents “The Little Mermaid Junior,” the musical distilled from Broadway’s 2 hours and 40 minutes to something closer to 75 minutes.

Editorial Spotlight with Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino live at 2 p.m.07.28.10

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, who recently passed the six-month mark in office, appears in an Editorial Spotlight interview at 2 p.m. today on LoHud.com. Astorino has been trying to marshal public and political support for budget cuts, financial concessions from union workers and a host of other changes in how the county does business.

He also is obliged to build 750 units of affordable housing, under a consent decree that he neither had a hand in crafting nor supports.

Port Chester Police Blotter: Car impaled on a Boot and a Car Repair Scam,07.28.10

PORT CHESTER

Grace Church Street: Police accused a 45-year-old Riverside, Conn., man of mooning a woman he knew as she drove by him at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Police said they found Michael Martinez of 4 Bertolf Road sitting on a wall near where he had pulled his pants down and turned his rear toward a Port Chester woman, 49,  that he knew. He was charged with misdemeanor public lewdness.

Putnam Avenue: A Yonkers man demolished a wheel-locking boot a private guard put on his Lincoln Town car, as well as the undercarriage of the car, when he drove off with the boot Tuesday night. Police said Imad Saleh, 45, of 46 Bennett Ave. parked the car in a private lot marked for customers only at 26 Putnam Ave. shortly before 10 p.m., when the business was closed. While across the street at a Chinese restaurant, a security guard booted the car. Refusing to pay the $70 fee for its removal, Saleh  attempted to drive off. Police said the Lincoln Town car, impaled on the boot, had canceled Connecticut plates on it. Saleh was charged with fourth-degree criminal  mischief for destroying the boot and ticketed for having an unregistered vehicle.

Westchester Avenue: Someone entered the basement of 315 Westchester Ave. through a window and stole $700 in clothing, a lamp and a mirror Sunday or Monday. The burglary was reported 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Westchester Avenue: A Stamford, Conn., man reluctantly paid two men $40 for spray painting his car in the Costco lot Monday afternoon. Police said two men in an old black Ford Explorer pulled up next to the man’s parked car, offered to repair scratches on the vehicle for $100 and proceeded to spray paint the car even though the victim refused their offer. When they finished they demanded $100; he offered $20. All finally settled on $40. No one was arrested in the scam.

Parker Street: A bottle of Valium capsules, a sterling silver chain and bracelet were stolen from an apartment between 10:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Monday.

Waterfront Place: Someone smashed a window on a car and stole a GPS while it was parked on the first floor of the Stop & Shop lot late Monday early Tuesday.

Rye Police Blotter:63-year-old Bicyclist Injured and more07.28.10

RYE

Stuyvesant Avenue: Someone stole a club employee’s bike from a Coveleigh Club bike rack. It had been left unlocked between 12:10 p.m.  and 8:10 p.m. Monday.

Forest Avenue: A wallet left unattended at Rye Town beach was stolen when the owner went to assist his son in the water for 20 minutes around 2 p.m. Saturday.

Boston Post Road: A man filled a bag with an unspecified amount of over-the-counter medication and ran from the CVS at 1121 Boston Post Road without paying at 4:20 p.m. Sunday. He drove off in a blue vehicle.

Forest Avenue: A 63-year-old Pine Island Road, Rye, bicyclist cut her head when she fell after colliding with a truck at the Pine Island Road intersection at 9:47 a.m. Tuesday. Police found the woman sitting in the street. She was taken to Greenwich Hospital. No one was cited.

Mamaroneck Police Blotters: Broken Jaw, Confrontation With Burglar and More07.28.10

MAMARONECK TOWN

Carol Lane: Police accused a Carol Lane resident Saturday of breaking a man’s jaw. Adam J. Steinberg, 22, allegedly punched a 20-year-old Mamaroneck village man in the face multiple times during an argument over a small amount of money at Steinberg’s home at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. Police did not disclose the exact sum. The victim went to Greenwich Hospital and reported the assault Friday. Steinberg was charged with felony second-degree assault.

Washington Square: Someone impersonating a local marketing consultant used the business’s stationery to send out solicitations for a shopping network. Bartell Business Inc. reported the impersonation Thursday after receiving calls about the letters.


MAMARONECK VILLAGE

Halstead Avenue: A burglar was confronted by a resident but still made off with $1,000. A woman returning home came face-to-face with a strange woman leaving her apartment clutching two of her gold necklaces at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. The victim grabbed at the fleeing stranger, causing her to drop the necklaces, but later discovered the stranger had made off with $1,000 cash from the apartment.

Harbor Island Park: Two men stole a wallet containing an ATM card, $80, and personal papers from the back pocket of a man sleeping in the park, waking him, around 11:25 a.m. Thursday.

Mamaroneck Avenue: A review of inventory revealed the theft of a BlackBerry cell phone from the 305 Mamaroneck Ave. Radio Shack Thursday.

Rose Lane: Someone broke the rear window on a 1993 Dodge Caravan while it was parked on the street between 8 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday. Nothing was stolen.

Palmer Avenue: Four cars were keyed while parked on the 500 block. The damage was reported just before 6 a.m. Saturday.

Ogden Avenue: A 22-year-old New Rochelle man with a suspended license was accused of driving while intoxicated, refusing to take a Breathalyzer test and running a stop sign at 4:38 a.m. Sunday. Police charged Christopher Doria with two misdemeanors, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and two violations, refusing to take a Breathalyzer test and passing a stop sign.

Waverly Avenue: Someone spray painted sexually explicit graffiti on a commercial truck while it was parked at 628 Waverly Ave. between 3:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 a..m. Monday.

Larchmont Police Blotter: Kayaks Stolen and Bank Doors Damaged07.28.10

LARCHMONT

Boston Post Road: Someone damaged the glass front door at the Wachovia Bank at 2065 Boston Post Road July 17.

Oak Bluff Avenue: Three kayaks, valued at $2,000, were stolen from a residential dock. The theft was discovered July 19.

Larchmont Avenue: Two benches in Constitution Park next to Village Hall were damaged. The criminal mischief was discovered July 19.

Palmer Avenue: A New Rochelle resident reported on July 20 that someone stole all the center caps, valued at $300, from his vehicle while it was parked in the Guitar Center parking lot at 2141 Palmer Ave. Center caps fit over the hub of a wheel in the middle of the hub cap.

Helena Avenue: A $300 bicycle was stolen from the rear yard of a home. The theft was reported Friday.

A crazy busy weekend of theater awaits…07.28.10

This is a busy weekend for summer-theater festivals, those shows that appear every late summer, populated by youngsters home from college or awaiting another school year. Below this is a sampling of theater offerings across the Lower Hudson Valley in the next few weekends, in Rockland, Putnam and Westchester counties…

A three-performance day?

Saturday is shaping up as one of those days that theater kids in Croton will be talking about for years to come.

“Remember back in 2010 when we did two performances of ‘Rent’ and one performance of ‘The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)’ in one day?” they might say. “That was a crazy day.”

Crazy.
