Chlorine leak contained at water plant in Harrison
No one was injured in a chlorine gas leak this morning at the 900 Lake St. Westchester Joint Water Works site, Department of Environmental Protection police said.
Westchester Department of Health spokeswoman, Caren Halbfinger, laid out further details in an email:
At about 7:30 this morning, an alarm went off at the Westchester Joint Water Works, 900 Lake Street in West Harrison, indicating there was a chlorine leak within the contained chlorine room. Inside, chlorine gas is kept in compressed gas cylinders and is added to the water supply through pipes.
After the alarm sounded, about 40 responders arrived, including the Westchester County Hazmat Team, the Westchester County Health Department spill response team, West Harrison Fire Department and DEP police, along with employees of the Westchester Joint Water Works.
Members of the county’s Hazmat Team went into the contained chlorine room in special suits and with air packs. They identified the leak, which came from a bad gasket on a connector between a chlorine tank and a pipe that feeds into the water supply. Team members isolated the cylinder and closed off the leak. Health department spill responders vented the room through existing piping that vents to a remote area in the woods.
No one was injured or exposed to the chlorine gas. The system worked as it was supposed to and the situation was resolved by about 9:30 a.m.
