On Port Chester’s Main Street, a shortage of shade

Posted by: Leah Rae - Posted in Environment, Port Chester on Aug 10, 2010

This is the time of year that we’re all looking for shade. But along North Main Street in Port Chester, pedestrians are losing what little shade they had. The trees are being removed for a replacement project, so the area is looking quite bare.

Trees were removed on this block last night. Village Manager Christopher Russo said the removal is part of a larger plan, with input from an arborist, to plant new and better trees. The project includes other street improvements and is to be funded with community development grants.

Charles Fulco says he will be watching, having seen the village cut down trees needlessly in the past. As a middle school science teacher, he knows that trees clean the air and replenish oxygen. “I just hope that the trees are suitable replacements,” he said.
