Purchase College will open an exhibit by Yuri Kobayashi, a recent artist in residence at the school, on Aug. 16.
Kobayashi, a native of Japan, trained in traditional Japanese woodworking before moving to the U.S. to pursue an MFA degree in woodworking and furniture design at San Diego State University. According to Purchase’s announcement of the exhibit: “Engrained from childhood in a culture that embodies a ritual of process, Yuri has been melding this passion with an awakening of her inner voice. Challenged by the limits of a second language, she uses visual language to wed her traditional underpinnings with the ethos of her soul…. Utilizing predominantly wood, she employs repetitive styles to create concept-based objects with an emphasis on sculptural forms. She is influenced by her origin, and her work is a reflection of her identity, experience and empathy…. A piece may be inspired by a boat, another by seed pods.
The exhibit in the Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery of the Visual Arts Building runs through September 10. An artist’s reception will be held September 9 from 5-7 PM. Exhibit hours are Mon-Fri., 9 to 5 PM. Admission is free.
