New Rochelle man’s death deemed accidental

Posted by: Will David - Posted in New Rochelle, Police & Fire on Aug 31, 2010

A 44-year-old New Rochelle man found dead at the bottom of his apartment building stairwell this past weekend apparently died accidentally, city detectives said Tuesday.

Simon Oliva-Montes of 153 Webster Ave. had a fracture in the back of the skull; he apparently hit his head and died from the injury, New Rochelle Detective Capt. Joseph Schaller said.

Oliva-Montes, a native of Mexico, was found at 11:32 a.m. Saturday after a resident heard a large noise outside his basement apartment at 153 Webster Ave. The neighbor found Oliva-Montes in a  pool of blood and called the police.

Olivia-Montes, who police believe was fatally injured in a fall, lived in the building where his body was found. Schaller said toxicology results are not available yet.
