Biloxi woman thanks Port Chester officers for help post-Katrina08.27.10

Four Port Chester police officers were thanked today for their efforts after hurricane Katrina by a former Port Chester resident who was living in Biloxi, Mississippi, when Katrina hit and these men came down to help.

Azilene Bailey, far right in the adjoining picture, spoke of her appreciation in front of Port Chester police headquarters this morning for the work done by, left to right, Port Chester police Lt.  Richard Conway, Officer Walter Alcivar, Sgt. Steve Barbara, and Officer Paul DiMeglio.

Chief Joseph Krzeninski, standing behind the officers, sent the men to Mississippi after the Aug. 27, 2010 storm to assist police there in any way possible, Lt. James Ladeairous said today.

Azilene Bailey saw the men there, recognized them as coming from her former home town, and was grateful.

The “thank you” she arranged was also attended by Gladys Addison and her husband Pastor Barry Addison of the Annointed Faith Ministry of Mount Vernon, and the Pastor Robert Girtman, looking at one of the  certificates presented to the officers, came from the Port Chester Church of the Living God.

Pelham police blotters: smashed front door, stolen badge and more08.27.10

PELHAM

Pelham Parkway: Someone stole a $300 red patent leather purse containing $1,300 cash, a Mount Vernon marshall’s badge and checks from that office as well as personal checks from a Ford Explorer Tuesday. The vehicle was thought to have been locked using the remote when it was parked in the BJ’s Wholesale Club lot between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. There was, however, no sign of forced entry.

Wolfs Lane: A 43-year-old Pelham Manor woman was accused of driving while impaired by alcohol, a misdemeanor, after a single-car rollover accident Thursday. Cathleen L. Schepis of 1055 Prospect Ave. was standing in the street near her upside-down Lexus at 1 a.m. after striking and seriously damaging a $5,000 street lamp in front of 163 Wolfs Lane. Police said she had a faint odor of alcohol on her breath. She was treated at Sound Shore Medical Center, and refused a chemical test there, police said.

Fifth Avenue: Two Pelham men said three men assaulted them at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday after asking for cigarettes. Two cars pulled up to the victims on the 10 block of Fifth Avenue and occupants asked if they had cigarettes. After the victims said no, three men got out of the cars and started to fight with them. One victim’s nose hurt; the other said his finger hurt. Both refused medical attention.

Third Street: Police believe two doors being kicked, one shattered, was the work of an intoxicated person early Wednesday and not a burglar, Pelham police Detective Rick Deere said. A 50-block resident awoke at 9:15 a.m. to find her front door shattered and the door jamb busted Wednesday. A partial footprint was visible on the lower left corner of the door. Nothing had been disturbed inside the home. A second Third Street resident, on the 60-block, reported hearing a loud bang around 12:30 a.m. and finding a partial footprint on the lower left corner of her front door. That door was not broken. Police believe it was someone walking by damaging property.

PELHAM MANOR
Wynnewood Road: Someone stole a golf cart and damaged it and parts of the Pelham Country Club late Tuesday into early Wednesday. A golf cart was stolen from near the main entrance to the club and driven across a green and a fairway on the New Rochelle side of the club, causing an as yet undetermined amount of damage to the grounds and the equipment.

Pelham Parkway: A 17-year-old New Rochelle man required three stitches above his eye and had a broken hand after an argument at the Omni Health and Fitness Complex turned physical Wednesday. The man said he was assaulted after entering the soccer field a few minutes after his paid-for time had started and the previous users had overstayed their time. The overstayers surrounded him, and when he pushed them away, one punched him in the face twice. The victim said he took a swing at his assailant, a man in his 20s but did not think he connected. Bleeding from the head, the victim reported the incident to the front desk. After he played soccer during his allotted 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. time slot, his friends took the victim to Sound Shore Medical Center for treatment because his hand had swelled.

Harrison police blotter: drug attest and car vandalized at PepsiCo08.27.10

Anderson Hill Road: Someone carved a derogatory sexually explicit word into a rear door of a woman’s 2005 Lexus while it was parked at PepsiCo between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday.

West Kenilworth Road: A resident of Weed Avenue in Stamford, Conn., was accused of having marijuana and cocaine in his car Sunday. Police said Eduardo C. Miraballes, 41, of 219 Weed Ave. was a passenger in his own car when police pulled it over for a broken headlight at 11:20 p.m. A search of the car that smelled of marijuana, police said, turned up an eyeglass case containing a plastic envelope of cocaine, a glass pipe containing partially smoked marijuana and a plastic bag containing marijuana. Police determined the property did not belong to the driver. Miraballes was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Port Chester train commuters could see higher fare than Greenwich08.27.10

Port Chester and Rye commuters might face a rather annoying circumstance if the proposed Metro-North fare increases go through as planned: They’d pay more for  tickets to Grand Central than their Greenwich neighbors, even though they’re taking a shorter ride.

A monthly pass from the Port Chester station would cost $247, up from $226. But a pass from Greenwich would stay at $237, 10 bucks cheaper than Port Chester. The New Haven line is mostly in Connecticut, and the two states make separate decisions about funding and fare increases.

Discussions are apparently under way to even out the pricing through a “hold-down” agreement between Connecticut and Metro-North Railroad. Meanwhile Port Chester commuters are considering buying their tickets from Greenwich stations, according to the Connecticut Post.

Actually, what’s to stop Port Chester folks from buying Greenwich tickets online or wherever and boarding in Port Chester? Well, that wouldn’t fly with the conductor, railroad spokesman Dan Brucker said. The value of your ticket is less than the ride you’re taking, so you would have to pay the difference. Oh.

The proposed fare changes for Metro North are linked here. For more on fare increases for MetroCards and for Westchester’s Bee-Line buses, see Ken Valenti’s story here on LoHud.com.

Rye and Harrison engineering consultants are disputing whether Harrison’s current plan to finally finish “Project Homerun” actually increases or decreases the flood risk on the site.

Rye’s engineer claims that adding and removing soil would decrease water storage on the Oakland Avenue site, while Harrison’s consultant contends that it would increase it.
