Larchmont historical society creates online index of WWI soldiers
In September 1918, Larchmont resident Harry Dudley was killed in action in Le Catelet, France, while fighting in the U.S. Army’s 107th infantry regiment.
A member of the former Weaver Street Fire Company, now the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department, Dudley is one of hundreds of World War I servicemen from New York to be featured in a new, online collection of photos, newsclips and other information compiled by the Larchmont Historical Society.
The historical society created this new resource by scanning, indexing and posting online all pages about fallen New York soldiers from the 1920 book “Soldiers of the Great War,” which attempts to identify every member of the U.S. armed forced who died in WWI.
“We were so pleased to find the picture of Harry Dudley (that) we decided to post the entire New York State collection online,” said historical society webmaster Ned Benton.
“Our intern, Michaela Roberts, spent many hours indexing each page, so every community in New York could find pictures of their soldiers who died in World War I.”
On the historical society’s website, the images are stored and displayed from a digital archive that can be searched by the name of the soldier or the name of the soldier’s residence. The online system makes it easier to search for specific entries than it would be using the original book, Benton said.
