Emergency village board meeting in Mamaroneck tonight11.29.10

MAMARONECK — Village officials have called an emergency meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m. at The Regatta, 123 Mamaroneck Ave., to discuss how the village Board of Trustees should proceed with its business when election results have not yet been finalized.

The winners of the Nov. 2 election were expected to take their seats Dec.  6. However, the election’s outcome remains up in the air, after GOP state Senate candidate Bob Cohen sued earlier this month to stop the count over reports of troubles with the new electronic voting machines.

Ballot-counting in the contested 37th state Senate district, which encompasses the village, dragged on through the weekend and is likely to continue into this week. If the results aren’t certified soon, the board would have only two of five members and may not be able to conduct business.

Pelham Manor, Rye police blotter: surveyor theft scheme11.26.10

PELHAM MANOR
Timpson Street: Kicking in the front door of a 600-block home set off an alarm that apparently frightened a would-be burglar away at 9:55 a.m. Nov. 23. Nothing appeared to have been stolen. Damage to the front door was $300.

Pelham Parkway: A Yonkers woman was not charged when she attempted to pay for merchandise with a counterfeit $10 bill at the Fairway Market at noon Nov. 23. Police said the woman did not know the bill was counterfeit and had no idea from where she got it.

Boston Post Road: A Mount Vernon couple was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center after the car the woman was driving became involved in a left turn collision at the Hutchinson Parkway ramp at 6 p.m. Nov. 22. She experienced back pain; he had head pain. The other driver was not injured. No one was cited.

RYE
Milton Road: While one man pretending to be a surveyor got a homeowner out of his home, another ransacked the place and stole almost $16,000 in jewelry and over $2,000 cash. While the distracted homeowner walked around his property with a supposed fence company employee at 4:25 p.m. Nov. 19, a second man the homeowner did not even know was around went into the home. The home owner first saw the second man waiting in a car for the supposed fence company employee as they finished up outside. Police said similar flimflams occurred in Mount Pleasant earlier the same day.

Grapal Street: A woman’s pocketbook was stolen from her car while it was parked in front of her home Nov. 21.

Theodore Fremd Avenue: A 41-year-old Harrison man was semiconscious and experiencing back pain after police found his car on the side of the road facing the wrong way at 1:30 a.m. Nov. 21. Because of his condition, police could not determine what happened. The victim was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle.

Boston Post Road: A 70-year-old Rye man had knee pain and was taken to White Plains Hospital Center after being struck by a car backing out of a parking space Nov. 21. The 34-year-old Rye driver’s vision was obstructed by a van parked between him and the man, police said.

Arrosto in Port Chester Now Open; Chef Richard Corbo at the Helm11.26.10

Arrosto, a new Italian restaurant in Port Chester, owned by Godfrey Polistina, opened this week in the former Hostaria Mazzei space — with its new chef in the kitchen. Richard Corbo, formerly of Ducca in San Fransisco, will be preparing the shareable wood-oven pizzas, homemade pastas and arrosti — or roasts.

(Here’s a nice little profile of Corbo, and some photos of the food he was doing out at Ducca.)

The newly renovated space, which will seat 230, has a sleek curved bar and a mix of booths and tables, plus counter seating near the homey centerpiece of the room: a woodburning oven and grill. A back room with a fireplace and white tablecloths will offer a quieter, more romantic atmosphere. There will also be seating for 50 outside, on South Regent Street.

The menu is traditional Italian “with a twist,” says Polistina, which means an emphasis on farm-to-table with lots of fresh pasta, homemade pizzas, roasted and grilled fish, poultry and meat, and a variety of small plates, such as Arancini with Spiced Sottocenere Cheese; Crab Crostini with Lardo & Chili Oil and Fritters with Fennel Pollen & Mortadella.

The centerpiece of the menu are the roasts, which are meant to share among three or four people. They include: 80-ounce 30-Day Dry Aged Bone-In Ribeye ($96); a 2 1/2 pound Whole Roasted Bronzino with Prosciutto ($42); a 3-pound Wild Lobster Arrosto with  Vanilla Brown Butter ($54); a 32-ounce Berkshire Pork Shoulder with Caramelized Onions & Amaro ($30); and a 40-ounce Roasted Stuffed Veal Loin with Chestnuts & Truffle ($60).

Here is a PDF of the opening menu.

Harrison supervisor to meet with residents on budget11.26.10

In her weekly column to residents, Supervisor Joan Walsh said cutting the tax-rate increase down to 2 percent will require $1.4 million in spending reductions next year.

Walsh’s 2011 tentative budget calls for a 6.73 percent tax-rate increase.

“The basic problem, of course, is that few residents are willing to have services cut, yet even fewer are in favor of an increase in taxes,” she wrote in her address. “So there will be an increase in user fees; we will offer to rent out some buildings for parties; we will seek income everywhere.”

Walsh will hold a Town Hall-type meeting on the budget Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the downtown Harrison library.
