Photographer Sandra Wong Geroux used the power of her work to help women earthquake survivors in Haiti, with a fundraiser in Larchmont last week that raised $24,000 in two hours.
The money will help the Haitian Amputee Mothers Alliance, a program of the Village of Vision for Haiti Foundation. Geroux, who lives in Larchmont, photographed the women in November in La Mardelle, Haiti. Geroux became involved with HAMA through friends in Chicago, where she lived until this past summer.
This was the first time that her work moved her to hold a fundraiser, she said. More than 300 people turned out at the Larchmont Temple, and checks from supporters continue to arrive. She said today that she’s been amazed at the response.
“I just wanted to expose people to another community,” the photographer said. “I think it’s nice once in a while to look outside your own community and see how other people live.”
