Port Chester hires former Pocantico schools chief for interim job

Posted by: Leah Rae - Posted in Port Chester, Rye Brook, Schools on Jan 27, 2011

Port Chester school board members braved the snow last night to meet and name a new interim superintendent. Apparently they had something of a storm of their own. By a 3-2 vote, they chose Thomas Elliot, who retired from the Pocantico Hills district in 2008, to serve in the top job through the rest of the school year.

Anne Capeci and Jim Dreves cast no-votes, preferring in-house candidates instead. Capeci said the two current assistant superintendents would have been more adept – and less costly.  “Either one of them would have been the better choice,” she said today. “I think it’s a slap in the face to the taxpayer.”

Elliot will receive a $1,000 per diem rate. He replaces Donald Carlisle, who left his $250,000 position early to take a superintendent role in New Jersey. A permanent replacement is being sought for the 2011-12 school year.
