Rye Playland report delayed • 07.29.11
A citizen’s group, which has been reviewing proposals for the historic Playland amusement park site, will not have its report finished by Aug. 1 as its members have hoped.
Peter Tartaglia, a spokesman for the county park, said today that the report likely won’t be completed until late August at the earliest. There has been no rush on the committee during this process, so the news isn’t really considered a setback, he said.
At a recent meeting, the committee indicated it would lean toward a hybrid approach of the dozen proposals, suggesting that certain aspects of some of them would work individually — as opposed to just giving a wholesale endorsement of a particular plan.
The plans were sought by County Executive Robert Astorino after years of losing money at the waterfront sight.
Iona College laying plans to inaugurate new president • 07.29.11
Dr. Joseph Nyre has begun work as president of Iona College, but he hasn’t had the pomp and circumstance of a formal inauguration ceremony. That will change Oct. 27-28, and in preparation, the college has formed a committee to plan the festivities.
The co-chairs of the committee are Ronald M. DeFeo of Westport, Conn., a member of the class of 1974 and President and CEO of Terex Corporation, and trustee and Sister Patricia McGinley, Special Executive Assistant to the President.
The other members of the committee are Dr. Paul M. Beaudin, Assistant Professor and Graduate Coordinator; Ms. Kathleen A. Hurlie, a trustee; John Manley, a professor of Finance, Business Economics and Legal Studies; Penelope Moore, Associate Professor and chair of Social Work; Tricia Mulligan, Associate Professor and chair of Political Science; Jessica Nealon, a student and the president of the Student Government Association; Brother Robert Novak, Professor and Chair of Physics; Marie Pace, Executive Assistant to the Dean of Arts and Science; Amy Parise, Director of Alumni Relations; Monica L. Judge, president of the Alumni Association; and Michael Petre, a student and President of the Edmund Rice Society.
Grandparents Coalition collecting money for back-to-school supplies • 07.29.11
A charity request from Westchester County:
“Grandparents who are raising grandchildren are looking ahead to September when they will need to find a way to pay for back-to-school supplies such as new notebooks, pens and backpacks. For a donation of $20 or more, the Grandparents Coalition of Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services will help these grandparents buy these basic tools of learning to help their grandchildren get off to a good start.
There are 4,739 grandparents in Westchester who have sole responsibility for raising their grandchildren. Many of these grandparents receive little or no subsidies and often have left retirement and returned to work to provide for them. Some are holding down two jobs to meet expenses.
At this time of year, some grandparents skimp on their own personal and medical needs just to save money for their grandchildren’s back-to-school supplies and other necessities.
The Grandparents’ Coalition, through the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, welcomes your tax-deductible gift of $20 or more. Send your contribution to the attention of Corina De Leon, program administrator of the Grandparents Coalition, at the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, 9 S. First Ave., 10th floor, Mount Vernon, N.Y. 10550-3414.
For more information, call (914) 813-6393.”

New Rochelle School District names five new administrators • 07.28.11
The New Rochelle School District announced on Thursday five new administrative appointments, chief among them being Velma Whiteside, who was named principal of Albert Leonard Middle School. Whiteside had spent the past 13 years as assistant principal at the school. Prior to that she was an assistant principal and dean at Mount Vernon High School. Whiteside replaces William Evans, who is retiring having served as principal since 1996.
Of the four other appointments, the one naming Leann Bruno, a former reading teacher, assistant principal at Jefferson Elementary School is the most eye-catching. That was the position Jose Martinez held until he abruptly resigned in March. Martinez was accused of having sexual relations with a then-14-year-old male student in 2010, when he was a dean at Isaac E. Young Middle School. Last week he pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal sex act.
Martinez’s position had been filled on an interim basis by Joe Jordano.
Elsewhere in the district, Kimberly Peluso was named assistant principal at Ward Elementary School; Rodney Arthur was appointed assistant principal of Albert Leonard Middle School; and Reza Kolahifar was made assistant to the superintendent for human resources.
Red Mango coming to Rye Ridge Plaza • 07.28.11
Red Mango Yogurt & Smoothies will call the Rye Ridge Shopping Center home for years to come.
The store will occupy the former Last Licks space, which was vacated this spring, under a long-=term lease that was announced today by Win Ridge Realty.
“We are beyond excited to have Red Mango,” said Erin Hinchey, the leasing person for the project. “Many ‘frozen concepts’ both national and local were competing for the space but we felt that Red Mango was the best fit for the center and our shoppers.”
Red Mango is the fastest growing retailer of all natural non-fat frozen yogurts in the U.S.
It joins Lv2bfit Active Wear & Accessories, GoWireless, Buddha, Chop’t, Indigo Chic, Elevation Burger and a financial institution that will be named once they receive regulatory approval as the newest tenents of the center.
The Rye Ridge Shopping Center is located at Ridge Street & Bowman Avenues in Rye Brook.
For more information, contact Erin Hinchey at ehinchey@winprop.com, (914) 468-7300 or visit www.ryeridgeshoppingcenter.com.
Mamaroneck Dems pick second candidate for town council • 07.28.11
MAMARONECK — Abby Katz, a longtime civic-group leader and volunteer, will be the second town council candidate on the Democratic ticket in the November election.
Katz was picked to fill the slot of outgoing Councilman David Fishman — who last month agreed to have his name appear as a placeholder on ballot petitions until Democrats could find somebody to run alongside incumbent Phyllis Wittner.
“Abby has been active in the community for many years,” the town Democratic Committee wrote in a statement announcing Katz’s candidacy today.
The Larchmont mother is a former president and current board member of the Larchmont Gardens Civic Association, one of the village’s oldest neighborhood groups, serving a triangular area bounded by Weaver Street, Rockland Avenue and Harmon Drive.
An accountant who has worked in financial project management for more than 20 years, Katz is also treasurer of the Murray Avenue School PTA and serves on the steering committee for the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force.
Katz lives on Cooper Lane with her husband and two daughters.
Katz and Wittner will be running against Republican-endorsed candidate Seth Marcus, a lawyer and 14-year resident of Mamaroneck town who has children in the local school system.
The town GOP has not formally announced a second candidate for the two seats up for election on the council this year.
Democrats have also endorsed Councilwoman Nancy Seligson to replace Valerie O’Keeffe as town supervisor; and incumbents Christina Battalia for town clerk and Jean Marie Brescia for town justice.
New Rochelle history quest • 07.27.11
Ever find yourself with a computer, some spare time and a dose of curiosity? That can lead to trouble, but it can also turn up interesting stuff. For instance, I recently typed “New Rochelle, NY” into the search field on the New York Public Library’s digital gallery site and turned up the below photograph of the New Rochelle Co-Operative Business League. And lots else, too. It’s worth a look.
Leave a note in comments if you have any information about the New Rochelle Co-Operative Business League. I’m curious to know more about it. Anyone know the names of the people pictured?
