ATM skimmer found at Rye HSBC branch

Posted by: Leah Rae - Posted in downtowns, Police & Fire, Public Safety, Rye on Oct 09, 2011

Rye police said they found an apparent skimming device inside the ATM at the HSBC bank branch on Purchase Street this morning and sent out an alert about a possible security breach.
Skimmers — attachments used to copy information from users’ bank cards — have been found in several machines around the region. Rye reported in an email alert that such a device was discovered at 9:45 a.m. in the HSBC at 67 Purchase St. Anyone who used the machine over the weekend is advised to contact their bank’s security department immediately.
Four other communities have detected such devices or secret cameras at ATMs: Bronxville, Yonkers, Pelham and Poughkeepsie.
Police recommend the following precautions for bank customers:
• Wiggle the slot of an ATM before using it. A loose slot could indicate a skimmer device. Report any loose slot to bank officials.
• Cover the keypad with one hand while entering your PIN, to prevent hidden cameras from recording the information.
