Middle-Eastern dance, children’s workshops and movie screenings and other events will be on tap at the New Rochelle Public Library to keep the young ones from getting bored during the summer.
Among the highlights, Asmara, a dancer and local belly dance instructor will perform with a band playing Middle Eastern music on July 24 at 7 p.m. as part of the library’s International Music and Dance program. The following day, children’s entertainer Zev Haber will perform at 10:30 a.m.

LIBRARY’S INTERNATIONAL MUSIC AND DANCE SERIES
CONTINUES WITH MIDDLE EASTERN PROGRAM
Music and dance of the Middle East will be performed at the New Rochelle Public Library on Tuesday, July 24th, at 7:00 pm, as part of the library’s 29th annual International Music and Dance series. The program is geared for families and individuals of all ages.
Aszmara, an internationally-renowned oriental dancer and local belly dance instructor, will present a number of traditional dances with origins in the Middle East. Armenian musicians Haig Manoukian on the oud, Souren Baronain on G-clarinet, and Mal Stein on dumbek, will perform the music for the fully costumed dances, as well as selections of Armenian, Turkish and Arabic traditional and folkloric music.
Admission is free and limited to the capacity of the Ossie Davis Theater, on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 6:45 pm.
“DREAM BIG!” LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
In addition to the extensive weekly workshops for children offered at the New Rochelle Public Library this summer, special programs related to the summer reading game theme of “Dream Big!” will be presented in the main library’s Ossie Davis Theater each Wednesday. The earlier session is for younger children, ages 2 – 5 and the second session is for older school aged children, 5 and up.
Zev Haber, one of the library’s most popular children’s entertainers, returns to the library on Wednesday, July 25th, at 10:30 am, for a show of terrific music and interactive fun for the younger set.
Children ages 2 – 5 years and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers, will thoroughly enjoy the lively 45-minute performance.
For children 5 years and older, Muppets Take Manhattan will be the featured film at 2:00 pm. Kermit, Miss Piggy, and their friends are dreaming of “making it big” when they take their college variety show to Broadway. They soon realize it’s not as easy as they thought – but find one young and idealistic producer willing to give them a try. After several mishaps and much confusion, things begin to come together for them. The 94-minute film is Rated G, and is free.
DISNEY CLASSIC, THE SNOWBALL EXPERSS, TO BE SHOWN AT LIBRARY
The New Rochelle Public Library’s family film series, Disney Hit Parade, continues on Monday, July 23rd at 6:00 pm, with the 1972 classic, The Snowball Express. Starring Dean Jones, Nancy Olson, Harry Morgan, and Keenan Wynn, the movie is about Johnny Baxter (Jones), a New York accountant, who inherits a hotel in the Rocky Mountains. He quits his job and moves his family out West to beautiful Colorado. But, the Rockies never seemed rockier as the Baxters find their “estate” in a state of total dilapidation! The color film runs 93 minutes. There is no charge.
The library’s Disney Hit Parade series continues on July 30th with a viewing of The Apple Dumpling Gang.
