DeCicco Family Market [1] in Pelham village offered a solution for its customers who lost power in Superstorm Sandy and didn’t want their frozen and perishable to go bad.

The store at 43 Fifth Ave. offered space in its walk-in freezers and refrigerators to store the food for them until the power comes back on.

“We’re holding onto their perishable items in case they lost power,” said store assistant manager Frank Torres. “A lot of people did take advantage of it.”

They ranged from people who brought in a bag of food to be refrigerated to those who brought “three or four boxes” of frozen food tomore-> be preserved. The store devoted two staff members to keep track of the food, one for frozen food, one for perishable items, Torres said.

The store has also been allowing people to charge laptops and cell phones and take advantage of the wireless internet service in the store.

“As they’re doing some shopping we’re keeping an eye on their laptops as they’re charging,” Torres said.
