Westchester County parks hit hard by Hurricane Sandy

More than two weeks after Hurricane Sandy both Glen Island and Playland parks are still closed and damage is still being assessed. [1]

Westchester County Parks Department officials are estimating it will take as much as $30 million to repair the damage to the county park system, a large share of the overall estimate of $50 million in damage to county property. But a final price tag won’t be available until workers can take a look at the footings under the Playland boardwalk and make assessments in other hard to reach places. It’s still difficult to get into Glen Island Park in New Rochelle, said Parks Commissioner Kathleen O’Connor.

Because of the dangerous condition of the sections of the Playland boardwalk that were not swept away, the county is putting up a 6-foot fence to keep pedestrians out of the area. They’ve been climbing over the short fences, she said.

“We want to get it fixed as soon as possible,” O’Connor said.

Workers have cleaned out the ice casino at Playland, she said on Tuesday at a Board of Legislators committee meeting, but the boiler and cooling system were under four feet of water in the basement and must be fixed before the ice can be rebuilt or before the pipes have a chance to freeze. The rides emerged relatively unscathed but the wraught iron fencing is bent in from the force of the water.

“It just looks like a movie where a dinosaur came in and stepped on it,” she said.

Playland alone could cost $12 million to fix.

At Glen Island, parts of the bath house are gone and half the sand on the beech was taken away. Many trees also toppled there. Lasdon Arboretum also lost many trees, among the hundreds down in parks across the county.
