Mamaroneck Public Library Trustee and Budget Vote

Here’s news from the Mamaroneck Public Library:

The Mamaroneck Public Library Trustee and Budget Vote will be held on Wednesday, December 12th from 7 AM to 9 p.m. in the Library Lobby.

Three candidates are running forĀ  three seats for Mamaroneck Library Trustee: Christine Love, a 6-year incumbent who currently serves as the board’s president; John Brenkovich, a certified financial planner who is a member of the Mamaroneck Chamber of Commerce and resident of Rye Neck; and Bob Fisher, a film and award-winning TV-commercial producer and 26-year resident of Mamaroneck. (Their bios are below).

The Library, which served a vital function in the community during Hurricane Sandy as a refuge for scores of residents seeking warmth, electricity to charge their devices, internet access and companionship, is proposing a tax levy increase of 2 percent in the coming budget.

This proposed increase is in line with the board’s commitment to account for the new, larger facility through managing the budget with small increases over time. The 2 percent tax levy would compute to an increase of $16.20 a year for the average Mamaroneck Village household.

The bulk of the increase is for ongoing maintenance contracts to replace initial warranties for the new equipment and reflects a small increase to enhance the Library’s collection of e-books, books, movies, etc.

The Library is continuing to generate modest revenue from overdue fines, meeting room rental and used book sales to lessen the burden for the taxpayers.

During Hurricane Sandy, children were entertained as staff showed free movies, held story times and provided games and crafts. Adults came day after day to work on library computers or their own laptops, to charge their cell phones, help themselves to the free coffee provided by the staff, watch elections results, and to escape their cold, dark homes to find “community” through the crisis. Mamaroneck Library continues its commitment to serve the village as a true community center, a resource for information, and a place for our children (and adults) to celebrate the joy of reading.
