Broadway co-star remembers Carly’s Broadway debut
When Carly Rose Sonenclar was 7, she played Young Cosette in the Broadway revival of “Les Miserables.” (That’s her at right, in a Joan Marcus photo.) The actress playing Cosette in that production was another Westchester actress, Ali Ewoldt, of Pleasantville, who would go on to play Maria in the national tour of “West Side Story.”
Here’s Ewoldt’s recollection of working with Carly back when:
“I absolutely adored working with Carly in “Les Miserables.” She was always so sweet and thoughtful and smart. I remember having dinner with her once and we were talking about her third-grade teacher and I mentioned that I loved my 3rd grade teacher (Mrs. Goodman at Bedford Road School in Pleasantville) and Carly asked me, ‘Did you love her because she was a good teacher or because she was nice?’ which, honestly, I’d never really thought about before. (Though she was both!).
“I remember that all of the Young Cosettes and Gavroches putting on a talent show for us in the theater and Carly got up and sang ‘On My Own”’and completely blew us away with her emotional connection and maturity and big powerful voice!
“I’ve been following her on ‘The X Factor’ and she continues to blow me away every time with her artistry and skill and grace under pressure.”
