Westchester legislators considering bonds to fix Sandy damage at Playland Park

The Westchester County Board of Legislators is pushing through two bond acts to finance repairs to the boardwalk and ice casino at Playland Park, which were damaged during Hurricane Sandy in late October.
The Parks Department is asking the board for quick action in the hopes the fall ice skating season can be salvaged. The storm surge from Sandy flooded the ice casino, pouring salt water into the basement and ruining the mechanical systems. The roof was also structurally compromised.
The water also tore up the north boardwalk and damaged much of the rest of the boardwalk, pushed in fencing, knocked out light poles and did other damage. An island of boardwalk with park benches and lights floated off shore after the storm.
One act being reviewed would authorize the bonding of almost $7.6 million to rebuild and repair the north, south and Kiddyland boardwalks and the main pier at Playland along with lighting, sound systems, fencing and roofing. The second, for $4.9 million, would allow the county to fix the roof and boilers of the ice casino and do other structural work.
The county is expecting to be reimbursed for a large percentage of the cost by FEMA and its insurance policies.
