Weather blamed for New Rochelle water main breaks

The change in temperature caused a small rash of water main breaks that sapped pressure from most of New Rochelle for much of Friday, United Water [1] said today.

As had been reported Friday, three mains broke early that morning. Two were in New Rochelle, on Webster Avenue and Cedar Street. The third was just over the border on Alta Drive in Eastchester.

But the cause had not been reported. Today, United Water spokeswoman Deb Rizzi said the rupturesmore-> were caused by the weather.

“We had some very cold temperatures,” she said. “When that happens we tend to see ground shifts and sometimes that leads to main breaks.”

About 80 percent of the company’s New Rochelle customers saw lower water pressure or brown water. About 100 customers around the breaks in the 12-inch main on Webster Avenue and the 16-inch pipe on Cedar Street mains lost power for several hours, Rizzi said. (The Alta Drive line was 6 inches in diameter.)

The New Rochelle Public Library downtown closed at noon that day because of the lack of water.

United Water crews restored full pressure by 2 p.m. Friday.
