The Village of Larchmont joined the City of Rye and the Village of Mamaroneck Tuesday night in banning plastic bags.
The Village Board voted unanimously to eliminate the single-use plastic bags, typically given out at the point of sale.
Merchants have until Oct. 1 to dispose of their existing inventory of plastic checkout bags and convert to alternative packaging materials.
The move is an effort to improve the environment and encourage the use of reusable bags, said Larchmont Mayor Anne McAndrews.
The Mamaroneck ban will go into effect on April 1.
The Westchster municiplaties modeled their legislation after East Hampton and Southampton on Long Island and Westport, Conn.
