MAMARONECK The Village Board and the U.S. Department of Agriculture mutually agreed to alter a prior contract which included a planned slaughter of geese this summer.
Amid mounting pressure from residents and animal advocates against the killing, the trustees asked a USDA representative this evening to revise the contract to exclude any lethal methods.
Last week, Trustee Ilissa Miller sought to introduce a motion to cancel the USDA contract with Mamaroneck, seconded by Trutee Andres Bermudez Hallstrom. After an executive session, the motion was withdrawn, with the board deciding to consider reworking the contract.
The USDA is slated to proceed with its plans to oil the eggs to prevent them from hatching.
Further talks on the rest of the contract is planned in the coming days.
Kiley Blackman, founder of Westchster4Geese, said the $8,700 contract should be “cancelled outright.”
“They can reinstate it again if they wish,”said Blackman. “What’s going on now is anybody’s guess. They have to adjust the pay scale and supplement the oiling.”
