Tara Shanes-Hernandez is honoring the fourth anniversary of her mother’s death from pancreatic cancer today. And later this month, so will hundreds of others.
Tara’s mother, Gigi Shanes-Hernandez, was a teacher and advocate for people with special needs. She died at age 52.
I organize this walk to keep my mom’s memory alive, while also helping me cope with her loss during this very hard time of year. My dad and I are embarking on a mission to fight the disease that changed our lives forever. She was the most amazing mom and I hope to make her proud through this walk and the work I do everyday in her memory!
The event has raised more than $730,000 for pancreatic research through the Lustgarten Foundation. For information, check the website for the walk.
Tara is a special education teacher at Barnard School in New Rochelle and lives in Mamaroneck.
