Alright folks, here’s a look at how I think today’s softball semifinals are going to go.
No. 8 Rye Neck at No. 5 Ardsley: I will be honest here. I didn’t see half of this match coming (even after the picks I made yesterday). But I do think that this should be a VERY good game. Ardsley has played a very tough schedule this year and have earned a place in the semifinals. Cassidy Wooten, Raina Gorman and company played spectacular this year and they beat a very battle tested and experienced Dobbs Ferry team yesterday. I really like Ardsley and I think they are very well coached. However, Rye Neck is not your average eight-seed. Joan Spedafino is a terrific coach and to do what they did against Lourdes was remarkable. Rye Neck is very experienced and Diana King has really come into her own in the circle stepping into some REALLY big shoes left behind by Jessica Calvini. Nickole Morgan is an excellent hitter. Softball in a lot of ways is about the pitching and Raina Gorman has been incredible this year for Ardsley as well as King for Rye Neck. This is going to be such a tight game and both teams have proven resillient in those kind of games. Prediction: Rye Neck over Ardsley. This game will come down to experience and that’s where Rye Neck has the edge. Next up: The winner of No. 3 Westlake and No. 2 Valhalla Saturday at North Rockland in the finals.
No. 3 Westlake at No. 2 Valhalla: This has the potential to be a good game and follow Phil on twitter @philterrigno for live updates from Westchester Community College. Onto the matchup — The Wildcats have had a great season. Christina Rizzo has pitched very well this year and held a very good Kennedy squad to two hits. Briana Mancuso has hit very well this year and in yesterday’s game. However, Westlake will be facing a very tough and experienced Vikings squad. Now I know the Westlake faithful will bring up the fact they beat Valhalla back in April and they would be correct. Yes they did but that was April. And if you really examine what happened in that game, one mistake in the fifth is what did the Vikings in. The reigning Class B champions who made their first state final four appearance last year has way too much experience. Sydni Holtz has grown tremendously since last year. Brandi Coon and Alyssa Lombardo are two very tough outs in their lineup. The Vikings have been in this position before and they will get the job done. Prediction: Valhalla over Westlake. Next up: The winner of No. 8 Rye Neck and No. 5 Ardsley Saturday at North Rockland in the finals.
