If you were walking by Flowers (City) Park in New Rochelle last week and thought you saw Doc Gooden–the Doc Gooden–playing ball, you weren’t hallucinating. The former Mets and Yankees great was playing in the annual WFAN All-Stars Celebrity Softball Game last Thursday.
Former New Rochelle resident Craig Carton and his on-air partner Boomer Esiason led Gooden and other athletes against a team of New Rochelle officials, including City Manager Charles Strome III and City Councilmen Lou Trangucci and Barry Fertel.
A raffle was held to raise money for the city’s parks. The drawing is Friday.
Other widely celebrated athletes, radio personalities and officials were there, too. And hats off to them for participating in a worthy cause. But at the risk of sacrificing objectivity, this reporter, when he was younger, worshiped Gooden. For that reason, the title of this post is in Doc’s honor.
