Lasagna for Passover? • 03.12.10
You better believe it! Today I photographed restauranteurs Wendy Weinstein Karp and Matthew Karp, who will be serving matzo lasagna as part of their Passover menu at Plates restaurant in Larchmont.

It was really good! Although the matzo doesn’t have the exact same texture as pasta, the dish is cheesy, filling and delicious. Happy Pesach! Mangia! Click here for more foodie goodness on Liz Johnson’s Small Bites blog.
New Rochelle Takes Down Mount Vernon • 02.09.10
New Rochelle came back from behind to defeat Mount Vernon 77-67 in boys basketball action on the Knights own court.

New Rochelle’s Antoine Mason drives to the basket as Mount Vernon’s Horace Copeland plays defense. You can see more photos from the game here.
An Overtime Loss for Mamaroneck Hockey • 01.12.10
What a game! Mamaroneck lost in sudden death overtime to White Plains, who defeated them 4-3 in a surprising end to a exciting matchup.

Dean Chiapparelli of Mamaroneck got in a great hit against Connor Lawrence of White Plains early in the game.

Remembering a Day of Infamy • 12.07.09

Hundreds of students, faculty, politicians, guests and veterans, including Joe Mammana of New Rochelle, who served in Korea, gathered first to learn about the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, then to raise an American flag that once flew over the USS Arizona Memorial on the flagpole outside the school.

Armando “Chick” Galella of Sleepy Hollow, a Pearl Harbor survivor pictured below saluting the flag, delivered a keynote address that was deeply moving.

However, I was also struck by a photograph that appeared in the educational slideshow.

This is Chick Galella when he was stationed in the Pacific as a young man. I took a picture of the screen in the auditorium at Bronxville High School as the snapshot was displayed, so the quality isn’t the best. Mr. Galella is well-known in Westchester not only for his courage as a Bronze Star recipient, but also for his community service. Seeing the young man he was and the distinguished man he is today affected me, and I wanted to share that with all of you, too.

Cheerleading Invitationals- happening now! • 11.24.09
I am blogging live from the exhibition floor of the Westchester County Center as cheerleading teams from Westchester, Rockland and Putnam compete for the Grand Championship.

The competition is running a few minutes behind schedule, but the final teams are warming up at this very moment! New Rochelle has a long history of excelling in this competition, but North Rockland just nailed their performance in the preliminary round. It’s going to be a very exciting night!
Ursuline Girls Soccer • 11.05.09
North Rockland shut out the Ursuline girls varsity soccer team today, 3-0. It was clearly heart-breaking for the Koalas, especially Quinn Freeman, who wiped away tears as she lined up to congratulate the Raiders at the end of the game.

That said, I hope they were cheered by the dozens of Ursuline cheerleaders and fans who filled the stands. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many students made the long trek from New Rochelle to Thiells for the game.

You can see action shots from the game here. Don’t forget to check out Mike Dougherty’s story in tomorrow’s Journal News, and follow your favorite high school sports teams at Varsity Central.
Girls Diving • 10.30.09
Coco Darelius, who dives for the Rye/Blind Brook/Rye Neck combined team, was all smiles tonight at the Section 1 girls diving championship at Pace University in Pleasantville. Dive after dive, she was just on top of her game.
