Author signing: “The Science of Yoga” Feb. 11 in Larchmont • 02.06.12
Anderson’s Book Shop in Larchmont will host a book signing with author William Broad, a science journalist and senior writer at The New York Times, on Saturday, Feb. 11th between 2 and 4 p.m. Broad will be signing copies of his most recent book, The Science of Yoga.
Broad will host two other local signings the following month: March 4 at the JCC of Mid-Westchester at 1 p.m. and March 25 at the Larchmont Library at 4 p.m.
Here’s the description of the book, from the event announcement: “The Science of Yoga takes us on a riveting tour of unknown yoga that goes from old archives in Calcutta to the world capitals of medical research, from storied ashrams to spotless laboratories, from sweaty yoga studios with master teachers to the cozy offices of yoga healers. Broad unveils a burgeoning global industry that attracts not only curious scientists but true believers and charismatic hustlers. In the end, he shatters myths, lays out unexpected benefits, and offers a compelling vision of how the ancient practice can be improved.”

Ursuline school’s latest statement on student’s death • 02.03.12
The Ursuline School this morning released its second statement on the suicide of a 14-year-old student earlier this week. The school’s statement is apparently in response to the Yonkers police department’s own press release last night.
Here’s the statement, attributed to Principal Eileen Davidson:
The Ursuline School has lost a wonderful young member of its close-knit community of students. Our grief is overwhelming. Eira Maghuyop loved our school and was fully engaged in Ursuline’s campus life. Our staff continues to take care of our students as they mourn, and we pray for Eira’s family. Those are our priorities.
Unfortunately, our grief has been compounded by the erroneous reports on the Internet and among some news organizations that Eira’s death was in part the result of bullying at Ursuline. We are reassured by the Yonkers Police Department statement that their investigation “has not revealed any evidence to support that bullying was a factor in this incident.”
We thank the community, our alumnae and friends for the outpouring of support. We continue to offer our students counseling, peer mediation, a personal development program, and peer ministry. We will also continue our chapter of Teenangels, a nationwide program of specially trained teens who promote Internet safety and cyberbullying awareness and prevention.

Remembering Marilyn Ackerman, lover of film • 02.01.12
Southern Westchester lost a great promoter of film and fine arts last week with the death of Marilyn Ackerman, 81, at her home in Mamaroneck on Jan. 24.
From a writeup submitted by her son, Brian Ackerman, the programming director at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville:
“She was deeply involved in the world of film, along with her husband, who operated art theatres in Manhattan and Westchester, including the Fine Arts Cinema in Scarsdale. In 1982, with Beth Kochen, Marilyn began the innovative Westchester Cinema Club, where film-lovers could gather to view new films from all over the world—without knowing what they were to see, and before they opened in the US — followed by a discussion with film critics and scholars. It became a model for film clubs nationwide, and the Westchester Cinema Club has remained oversubscribed for all of its 30 years. She and her husband, Meyer, spent many years traveling to international film festivals, and she immensely enjoyed their years in the heart of the film industry. In 2003, the couple was given a Special Honorary Award For Their Contribution To Film by the County of Westchester.”
Survivors include her husband, Meyer; their three children, Farrell, of La Jolla, CA; Harriet, of Hastings on Hudson; and Brian, of Croton on Hudson, and five grandchildren.
