PORT CHESTER — A Connecticut man who died after being found unconscious in a Port Chester parking lot did not die as a result of a fight, according to a Connecticut medical examiner, police said Tuesday.
But the mystery remains as to what caused Gilberto Barrera Hernandez, 41, of Stamford, to die after he was found early Monday.
A 4:05 a.m. call of a fight in the parking lot behind La Gratta, 107 Adee St., led police to the unconscious but breathing Hernandez in a corner of the lot. No one was near the unconscious man when police arrived. Hernandez went into cardiac arrest while being taken to Greenwich Hospital, police said. He was declared dead at the hospital at 5:07 a.m.
Aside from having a cut on his hand and being a bit disheveled, Hernandez did not have visible wounds, police said. The Tuesday autopsy confirmed that Hernandez was not beaten to death. No other cause of death was evident from the medical examiner’s physical findings, police said.
Police said they will have to wait for toxicology reports, which can take several weeks, for a possible answer to the mysterious death. The death has not been classified as a homicide.
