Gridiron battle: Rye and Harrison square off Saturday • 10.15.10
The Rye and Harrison football teams renew their storied rivalry on the football field Saturday afternoon, and over at MyRye.com, blogger Jay Sears has this advice:
If you are new to Rye, do NOT ask your neighbors to come over for a BBQ Saturday afternoon unless you live within 1-2 blocks of John Nugent Stadium and are throwing a tail gate party with Garnet flags flying… If you wear any garment with the word “Harrison” on it you will subject you and your family to a lifetime of embarrassment.
Rye has been on a winning streak in recent years. But if you think another victory is guaranteed, our Varsity Insider, Josh Thompson, says not so fast — he offers this analysis and prediction of the game:
Harrison at Rye, 2 p.m.: The Garnets are closing in in the all-time series, which stands at 41-35-3 in favor of Harrison. You all know by now that Rye has won seven straight, but what you, and I, and maybe Harrison and Rye don’t know is how much Connor Eck can play. The potential absence of such an integral player weighs so heavily on the game. So let’s assume he plays, but only a limited role. Rye would have to deliver a dynamite performance to win. Harrison appears to have stronger line play. Rye would need to win that battle. Harrison appears to have a stronger, deeper backfield. Rye would need to at least even that matchup. If the Garnets can’t achieve success in those two areas, how can they overcome the loss of the key figure in their passing game? Maybe with a couple turnovers, but that is so hard to predict. In the end, Harrison should win if it protects the ball and plays from in front. Neither is a guarantee, but I believe the Huskies have what it takes to end the streak. PREDICTION: Harrison, 17-14.
