Monroe College chips in for Memorial Day parade • 04.13.11
New Rochelle’s Memorial Day Parade will go on this year, in large part due to a $10,000 contribution from Monroe College. In an effort to save money, city officials agreed to cover police and fire overtime costs but solicit funds from community organizations to make up the rest.
“Monroe College’s leadership exemplifies the kind of public-private partnership through which we can preserve our important community celebrations, even at a time of fiscal challenge,” Mayor Noam Bramson said in a news release.
At the college, Executive Vice President Marc Jerome said, “Monroe is proud to be a part of New Rochelle. And we are pleased to sustain great traditions that bring the entire New Rochelle community together.”
The Memorial Day Parade will be held May 30, beginning with a 10:30 a.m. ceremony at Memorial Plaza.
Monroe College heads to national competition • 04.10.11
Congrats to the Monroe College SIFE team, which is bound for a national exposition, in Minneapolis, May 10-12.
Students in Free Enterprise is an international organization that, as a Monroe College official explained, encourages students to use what they learn in class to improve their communities. The Monroe team’s report, Their Need…Our Improvement, earned the school its eighth consecutive regional title at a competition earlier this month.
Monroe’s SIFE teams are typically strong. In 2005, the team was named National SIFE Champion and won itself an appearance on a box of Corn Flakes (the enterprising man’s Wheaties).
Monroe students take up NYC scavenger hunt challenge • 09.08.10
Now this sounds like fun. Monroe College had its incoming freshmen at its New Rochelle campus bond by sending them off for a “NYC Hunt,” a scavenger hunt in the Big Apple.
Via the college: “Upon arriving in New York City, the students departed college buses in Times Square and, under the guidance of Carolyn Bennett, Student Activities Coordinator, and a cadre of Resident Assistants they were given less than two hours to identify or create up to 35 scavenger hunt clues. These ranged from ‘taking a picture behind bars’ to ‘taking a picture under water.’ They were also asked to ‘get a giant kiss,’ ‘get photographed on the steps to nowhere,’ ‘pretend to drive a NYC taxi cab,’ and ‘take a picture of your team name; think creatively.’”
Classes began on September 8th with approximately 2500 day and evening associate, bachelors and MBA degree candidates enrolled at the New Rochelle campus. A total of 7800 are enrolled at Monroe’s four campuses, including the Bronx, St. Lucia and online.
